Tapcons were voted the favorite type of concrete anchor by my audience so I wanted to put together a straightforward video on how to install Tapcons and what do to if you hit a speed bump. Tapcons are a great product but there are several common mistakes that can derail your project which I will try to help you avoid.

  1. Great video. I’ve had issues driving in Tapcons all the way and I realized I didn’t drill deep enough or clean the loose material out of the hole.

  2. Instead of the electrical tape trick. I just get out a sharpie marker. Spin the drill bit and touch the marker at the depth I am going for. Washes off with a little rubbing alcohol. That way you don’t have adhesive from tape or have to worry about getting stuff stuck in the drill.

  3. Tapcons are trash. Sorry had to get it out of my system.

Built houses for over 30 years. Have affixed literally thousands of boards to concrete and steel and other various hard materials. We used Tapcons when we worked out of state and forgot to bring real anchors with us.

A concrete anchor shouldn't be able to be stripped out of its hole….it's friggin concrete. It either grabs or the anchor is no good. Over tightening shouldn't be a real issue unless you're just a complete bonehead.

They'll work if you have to use them but are pretty finicky as far as concrete anchors can go.

  4. Best way I've found to clear debris from that drilled hole is to use a can of compressed air. Quick, easy, and portable.

  5. I have had a lot of problems with the drilled holes being too loose. I have used the specified drill bit size. I think I must be pushing too hard on the hammer drill and the hole becomes oversized.

  6. How about sealing the holes around the wedge anchors or these Tapcon screws? I am putting in an outside hand rail into concreate and dont want moisture to get in the hole and freeze. Any tips?

  7. Wow! I drill hundreds of holes a day with an SDS 3/8 red head and each hole takes like 5 seconds at most. After about 100 the bit starts to wear, I never use these bolts because they don't hold the weight. These screws are definitely for the diy but professionals shouldn't use the screws that you can never tighten down.

  8. For the job you're performing, I would have inserted rubber damping squares between the concrete and the feet of the AC condensor to limit vibration to the unit.

  9. Ive seen some of the blue coated Tapcons get rusted out in exterior applications in humid Florida. I prefer the stainless versions if the project allows.

  10. I sort of like them but sort of dont. You kinda can't keep moving them. With wedge anchors you can remove the nut and move the item to like clean underneath and stuff like that, and then put it back and retighten the nut. With tapcons you'd have to remove the entire tapcon and everytime you do the hole isn't as tight. But if you actually DO need to remove the tapcon completely you can, then just fill the hole. With anchors you gotta cut it off with an angle grinder.

  11. Yes, that hammer drill was not on the powerful side. SDS will also give you much, much better hammering and speed, even on the same powerdrill, than a standard choke head. The stroke is longer.

  12. you should use rubber blocks with rails on them under that unit so when it snows the unit is not burried and the fan doesnt freeze stuck.

  13. A 7 minute video on how to use a Tapcon screw. "Bring a lunch everyone because part way through our training today, we're going to stop for lunch before we get to the 2nd half of the video".

  14. About to use these exact same sized Tapcons for setting posts for a horizontal fence on a newly poured slab for our pool. Question…. Any recommendations on how far off the edge you should go? I'm afraid with a large size like that, getting roo close may cause popping or cracking issues. Was thinking of setting the footings about three inches in from the edge. Any advice would be awesome!

  15. I don't like the tapcon anchors. It seems about half the time I try to tight them the threads just strip out the concrete instead of making a secure connection.

  16. That most common failure point of bottoming out was my first disaster too. Since then smooth sailing using tapconns. Great vid!

  17. I've seen those Tapcon concrete screws corrode significantly from moisture in concrete. The heads shear off if trying to remove only after a few years, especially for the 3/16" diameter size. I would only use stainless concrete fasteners in an outdoor environment.

  18. If a Tapcon strips out just take a piece of bailing wire or weedeater string and stick it in the hole and screw in your Tapcon. Make the wire or string longer than the hole so you can cut it off after you screw in the Tapcon.
