Can I use Retinoid with only face oil and moisturizer?

About the paper at around 3mins; the control group's placebo, isnt it possible that the cream they used exacerbated collagen breakdown or slow its 'growth'? (i have 0 knowlegde of collagen btw) but if that were the case, that would compromise the comparison, the results. Did they account for that?
Also, (intuitively) wrinkle formation seems to be primarily a result of Internal processes. So the solution of applying topically seems counterintuitive; the body is usually very skilled at counterbalancing anything that it receives from contact with the environment, its build to do just that. What i mean to ask is, does it have longterm effects also? As in, improvement over years and decades. The body doesnt 'compensate' for what is regularly applied to the skin because it doesnt recognize it as 'being part of its system'? Or is that not a thing?

Now in Canada you can’t find tretinoin 1% ? even with dr’s proscription , it’s banned I guess only .05 is available . I used 1% and now back to .05 unfortunately so is it ok or what should I I do
